Instructions for using extended tool rest......

Parts Enclosed. (7 in total)

  • Tool Post (size as ordered). Blind hole at one end and threaded hole at the other.

  • Bar 7" long of 1" x ½" with three holes. One Large and two smaller.

  • Three reinforced nylon inserts.

  • One with ¾" groove

  • One with a ½" groove

  • One with a plain flat top

  • Bolt

  • Washer

The larger hole in the bar is dropped over the threaded end of the post and secured with the bolt and washer.  An insert with a grove the right size to match the shaft of the deep hollowing tool being used is placed at the far end of the bar.  This will then support the tool right inside the vessel being turned.

If the tool post is inserted upside down without bar fitted, an insert will fit into the blind hold and give support without extension.  This can be useful at the start of a project.

The lat-topped insert is included to assist in using a bowl gouge.  It needs to be cut so that it has a slope on the top with a hole drilled in it to take one of the other inserts.  This will enable a bowl gouge to be presented to the back of a bowl with bevel rubbing.

As all lathes are different and all turners as well, it is not possible to cut an angle to suit every one.  We would suggest that you turn one or two inserts in hardwood cutting a slope angle of about 35 degrees on the first.  Try it out, and cut the others with a greater or lesser slope until you find out what suits you best.  You can then copy the angle onto the nylon insert knowing that it will be right for you.

Using this extended rest for bowl gouge work is not easy and will take a little bit of getting used to.  If you back the bolt on top, off a fraction, it allows you to arc across the bottom of a bowl in a clean sweep.

Should you find one of the groves in the inserts too tight a fit, a fine rat-tail file or length of dowel and some sand paper will soon ease it out.  Additional inserts can be obtained at a cost of £1.00 each plus p/p.
